Your PC Can Be Energy Saving Too

Let's start with some simple maths...
250/1000 x 8 = 2
450/1000 x 8 = 3.6

Next question is what do these numbers refer to?
Kilowatt-hours, that unit of energy measurement seen at the bottom of your electricity bill. Usually noted as kwh or kw/h. Kilowatt-hours cost you money and so obviously the lowest amount the better. The numbers above refer to PCs, 250 referring to 250 watts of a typical small form factor PC and 450 watts for a typical mid-tower PC.

If you are wondering just how much your PC actually costs to run a year then you need to apply the rate from your electricity company.

In this example, Fred Smith, a typical home worker, uses a mid-tower PC at his home office for eight hours a day. Fred's working year consists of 240 working days and he pays £0.137 for each kilowatt-hour of electricity. Over the course of the year that works out as an awful lot of kilowatt-hours, to be precise:-

 450 watts to kilowatts is simply 450 / 1000 = 0.45 kilowatts

kilowatts to kilowatt-hours is simply obtained by multiplying by hours

so in Fred's example it is 0.45 x 8 (hours) x 240 (days) = 864 kw/h

which in turn costs Fred... 864 x 0.137 = £118.37 a year to run

A fair bit of money. Just imagine that you are an accountant of a fairly large city business and you have 300 mid-towers, well that's £35511 or in other words one (or even two people's) salary. Now let's say that you want to do something about it, the electricity company is about to raise their kw/h rate and you don't want to be paying for some electricity manager's next handsome bonus.

Energy saving PCs - now there's a thought, surely it's not just light bulbs that can be energy saving? Your rival's electricity bill for his 300 workstations is £789.12. Surely not? Pure fiction you say. But no, your rival is ahead of the game in the energy saving PC field. He has done his homework and yes, his electricity bill is 1/45th of yours. Hang on, 1/45th, as in 10 watts to run a PC? You're having a laugh mate! No, he's not. His energy saving PC's consume just 10 watts of electricity per user.

So what are you going to do with your £34721.88 yearly saving? A pat on the back? A grandiose Christmas staff party or how about reinvesting that saving into company development?

The Energy Saving PC is not pure fiction, it's a reality. Ten watts per user is perfectly achievable in 2012 and it is being achieved. Here's the recipe, get one PC made of aluminium and just 11cm square. This PC, the Xi3 Modular Computer runs on just 20 watts, not 10 watts no. Simply add into the mix, Xi3's TAND3M software and suddenly your 20 watt energy saving PC turns itself into two energy saving PCs. One Xi3 Modular Computer, two keyboards, two mice, two screens and two users. The result one low electricity bill and one happy accountant.

Solving Laptop Keyboard Problems

Most of the problems that are encountered by the keyboards in your laptop are simple enough that they can be handled at home. Hence, by following some simple steps it is possible to rectify these problems and you will not be required to take your device to a nearby service centre for repair. By cleaning your keyboard regularly you can effectively keep all problems associated with at bay. Some of the most basic problems like certain keys not working or the need to press the keys hard to get the desired results can be solved right in your home. Given below are some useful ways of solving these kinds of problem:

1. Keys not working
There could be occasions when certain keys may stop functioning altogether. This could be due to dust settling down on them or when you spill something over it. Certain keys may also stop responding when they are pressed gently because of insufficient lubrication or using them excessively while playing games. The below given steps should help combat these problems.
A] First up, you need to use a small screwdriver to carefully remove all keys from your keyboard. Then loosen the rubber pieces from each of them and place them separately.
B] Once all keys are removed from your keyboard, you can either use an ear bud or a cotton swab dipped in water to gently clean the inner regions of the keyboard. However, make sure that you do not use too much water for this cleaning purpose.
C] After cleaning the inner regions of your keyboard you need to start cleaning the individual keys using a light fluid and foam rubber. After cleaning these pieces you need to leave them alone to get dried up.
D] Once the keys are dried up you can assemble them back into the keyboard carefully. Make sure that the rubber pieces too are assembled in their appropriate places.

2. When wrong characters are typed by keys
When wrong characters are typed by keys the underlying problem could be related to software, rather than hardware. During these circumstances, you may need to change your control panel settings. There is an option called "Change Key Sequence" within the section "Key Settings". So you need to click on this option to kick-start the troubleshooting steps.
While the above mentioned steps are pretty useful for handling minor problems, you may need to take your device to a service centre and get the laptop keyboard checked there for major problems.
When laptop keyboards are smooth and truly functional it can be a fun-filled experience working on your laptop. However, when it starts malfunctioning, your problems could get compounded. So you need to make sure your device is original and is covered under warranty schemes.

Difference Between a Wireless Repeater and a Wireless Bridge?

Difference Between a Wireless Repeater and a Wireless Bridge?
The main difference between a wireless repeater and a wireless bridge is that a repeater simply extends the range of a network while a bridge ties two networks together. A client bridge links computers. A wireless repeater connects routers. These simple definitions don't quite cover what they do and why you may need them, so read on for more information.

What Does a Wireless Repeater Do?
A wireless repeater is a device that creates an access point that bounces a wireless signal to the main router. This increases a wireless signal's range. For instance, if your access point is on one side of your house and you want to use the network on the other side, but the signal is low or nonexistent, then you simply set up a wireless repeater at the edge of the range of your first access point. Thus, the wireless signal is extended.

What Does a Wireless Bridge Do?
A wireless bridge connects more than one network of signals together. These are usually physically separated networks. It allows businesses to connect different offices and floors of networks together to make a seamless connection rather than overloading a single network with too many connections. Why would you not want to overload a single network with too many connections?
Think of a wireless network like a local highway. The more data you have, like cars, the slower traffic becomes. If you have routed that traffic properly, you will avoid data congestion and maintain optimal data speeds. This is why it is essential to set up a separate network on each floor of an office building and then connect them, rather than setting up a repeater system.
However, it is essential to set up a repeater system within floors, especially if the floors are large. Data tends to slow down the longer the cables or airspace is between the devices. A repeater takes the data and resends it gain at original speeds. So repeaters slingshot data between the sender and receiver while routers act like highways, directing that data traffic. Bridges are simply connections between different networks.

What to Look for When Buying a Repeater?
Are the bridge, repeaters, routers, and wireless antennas compatible with each other? This doesn't always mean the same brand, but it is probably a good idea. Some equipment is only capable of sending and receiving signals to other equipment of the same type, for instance, bridges with bridges. Look carefully at the product you are buying and make sure it is compatible with your routers and if it offers the repeater mode. Check for a removable antenna, external connector, and multiple Ethernet ports. And make sure it has both point to point and multipoint nodes. Make sure the range between devices will cover the distance you need it to in the location you plan to set it up in.
What to Look for In a Wireless Bridge
Bridges tend to be compatible only with other bridges of the same type of chipset and firmware. Before you purchase on, make sure it is compatible with all your other equipment as well as other bridges. Also, check for the same things you did in a repeater. Consider getting a power-line bridge to penetrate cement brick, metal walls, metal shelving, and other obstacles that can hinder or stop a wireless signal. This allows the signal to get a boost by traveling down electrical wires.
Basic Set-up
Place your router in a central location. For a home, this would be in the middle of common areas you use. For an office, locate it centrally in the building. Build outward from that. Check where the range of the router signal is, then set up repeaters so that their range overlaps the router signal. Set up the bridges between routers of different floors or building and between rooms separated by wireless signal obstacles. Each brand of wireless device is different and has different range distances. And remember to set all devices within a wireless setup to the same wavelength.
It is important to fully understand how your routers and repeaters need to be set up for optimal network service between all devices and the internet in your home or business. The right set up will enable seamless and fast connection within your network and to the internet. It will also ensure a secure connection for transferring data and files within your network and to the internet.
